OLD SCHOOL FEMALE ARTISTS!
Any female artist that went through the 90’s and early 2000’s experienced an unprecedented level of sexism and endless red flags that would be called out immediately and very publicly cancelled in modern times. Back then it was expected in the industry that apprenticeships took over 4 years minimum to complete regardless of gender. Only a select few male tattooers progressed… even less women tattooers survived those times and I can guarantee that there are more apprentices that were taken advantage of than there are contemporary trading tattooers of that period.
Thank you Noemi’s mentor tonytroise for providing a decent safe space for an aspiring female tattooer back when women were seen as vessels for abuse, control and manipulation just because they wanted to be a tattoo artist. Even more so that in Europe there was even less regulation than in the UK.
The horror stories are very real. Due to badass women like Noemi: the extent that women who tattoo no longer have to do endure the same amount of sexual and emotional harassment that was consisent and normalised for years under the guise of ‘apprenticeship’.
As we welcome another year that inevitably brings new faces and further ignorance to the trade- please do not forget the women that arduosly struggled, faught and were inevitably abused just to do what love. Don’t forget those that came before you. Especially those women, those mothers, those businesswomen that are battling hidden symptoms you dont have the capacity to understand.
